John Adamson was born and reared on the east coast of Scotland. He worked in the mines to support his family. In 1836 he married Helen Cameron and they were the parents of five children. The Mormon missionaries came to his town in Scotland in 1842. John, his wife, and his parents were all baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1861 John left his home to come to Zion. They sailed on the ship Monarch of the Sea which was a new sailing vessel and had been booked to take converts to America. It was a large ship and carried the largest number of Saints to cross the ocean in one vessel.
His oldest daughter Janet was married on board the ship as it neared New York. Two other children, Andrew and Margaret, were professional dancers in Scotland and danced for the entertainment of the passengers during the voyage. When they reached America they traveled to Florence, Nebraska where they were met with teams and wagons sent by President Brigham Young to help them cross the plains. They left in July in the John R. Murdock company and arrived in the salt Lake Valley on September 12th, 1861.
John took his family to Wellsville in the Cache Valley where he lived until his death on June, 1902.
